"believing in yourself only gets you so far" - so when self confidence & persistance fail, an invisible presence will accomplish things for you and NOT other people working with you on a common goal (eg, applying for a job - the man interviewing you gives you the job because of your previous work/experience/education etc)

I’m going to assume this is just a response to the previous question from a different anonymous poster, in which case I agree with the point you’re trying to make. Saying “believing in yourself only gets you so far” is probably the worst kind of self-confidence I’ve ever heard and I’m sorry I didn’t acknowledge this in my earlier response. With this mentality you have literally set a limit on yourself, a limit that you cannot surpass on your own, and of course when you have this limit you’re going to turn to outside sources, whether they be friends, family, religion, science, whatever it may be. The problem is not with seeking help, we all need help every now and then. It’s this idea that you are limited. That is atrocious, such a terrible thought to have that I can’t imagine not just wanting to quit whatever I’m doing because what does it matter, I’m going to reach a point where I’m fucked eventually.

I remember reading a story of a man who used to run with Bruce Lee, and I’ll try to paraphrase it as best I can because it is insanely relevant to this thought. “Bruce and I would run a couple miles in the morning, 2-3, in a pretty good pace. We were about to go running one morning and Bruce said we’re going to try for 5 miles. I said I wasn’t sure I was going to make all 5 at such a fast pace, but that I’d try anyways. We go through the first mile pretty quickly, and I’m doing alright, second mile still doing okay but starting to get tired, and by the third mile I’m out of breath, cramping, and basically couldn’t run anymore. As we’re running I told Bruce I couldn’t make all 5 and I had to stop. He replied “well why don’t you just die then”. This infuriated me and I got so mad I ended up no longer caring how much it hurt and made it to the end of the 5th mile. Once I caught my breath, I confronted Bruce, “Hey man, why would you say that about dying, that was uncool”. Bruce replied “if you’re going to set limits on yourself you’re never going to get better. You’re always going to have an excuse to quit”.

This poorly paraphrased story has seriously changed the way I look at my attempts to accomplish things. No limits should ever work their way into my attempts. I should still be realistic (i.e. I’m not going to fly) but being realistic shouldn’t limit me either (i.e. I can study jet propulsion and aerodynamics and make a jetpack). Anything is possible, especially in the world we live in. Patience is a necessity to achieve certain things, but patience should never negate your will to achieve. And I believe the real reason so many people turn to religion is a combination of fear of failure and fear of the unknown. Once a person accepts failure and no longer lives as if it’s something that should be avoided at all costs, they’d be amazed at how far believing in one’s self will get them.

something like following the bible or even following buddha shouldn't be frowned upon. these messages are full of wisdom and hope, they all share a general message and that's to spread compassion. if you choose to do so without religion, then sure. i mean even believe in yourself, that you have the power to create all around you, shoot, you might; but let me testify, believing in yourself only gets you so far. maybe that's why people choose religion.

Really? That’s why more people have been killed in the name of the Christian God than any other God? That’s why the Head of the Catholic religion is covering up pedophile scandals? That’s why Islam in the middle east is running rampent and treating women like property? That’s why Hindu’s still seem to consider their old caste system that’s discriminatory as legitimate? If you think the teachings of Buddha and the Bible, not jesus, but the bible, are the same then you need to educate yourself a lot more on eastern religions and the bible. As for why people choose religion, well that’s easy, they’re afraid of the unknown and religion attempts to fill that void with terribly flawed suggestions. Following the bible should be frowned upon, it’s legitimacy is a joke and its teachings are outdated and barbaric. I won’t deny that Jesus as a philosopher had some good teachings, but Christianity is a perversion of those ideas. You don’t need to be a Christian to acknowledge what Christ said.

Because I’ve gotten so much backlash about quoting the bible out of context, let me help you all gain some knowledge about this book that we’re all so fond of quoting. Seriously, if you are Christian or Catholic please learn a little about the history of a religion you’re so willing to go crazy over.

I rebloggee your billboard post. And yes, i added my own commentary. And yes, i acknowledge that some christians misquote / take bible out of context. But that post was so fucking wrong. I looked up every single one of those and they came out as misquoted/ out of context. And dont talk to me about blacks, women, gays etc being left out. JESUS WAS MIDDLE-EASTERN, NOT WHITE. the word "homosexual" was only invented some time in the late twenthieth century.

And yet the biggest advocates against homosexual marriage are religions? I really don’t understand what you seem to be trying to get across with the fact that Jesus was middle eastern and not white. I completely agree, jesus was a jewish middle eastern man, and the white image of him was actually made in the likeness of an italian dictator. So again, why are you telling me this? As for the quotes being out of context, i really don’t want to go through explaining each one again so i’ll try to summarize as best as i can. The fact that the moral teachings of the bible, the very teachings that so many people are trying to implement in TODAYS TIME, the fact that they are to be only applied, criticized and considered in the context of their time, back then, 2000 years ago, means that you can’t do that! haha you can’t say ‘oh jesus said we should live like this’ and then someone like me comes along and says ‘well there’s this, this, and this wrong with that’ and your rebuttal is “YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE CONTEXT! IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME AND THINGS WERE DIFFERENT BACK THEN!” Well if that is the case, why the fuck are we still following rules and laws that were meant for people who had no moral compass? Who had no idea how to live in a functional and peaceful society? The reason these quotes are great is because something like “Blessed is the one who grabs your little children and smashes them against a rock” has NO place in our society, no matter what the context is. We do not live in the same world as they did, and if anything, the bible should be revised to be applied to this futuristic time. But then you’re revising the supposed word of god and that is blasphemous. So we’re supposed to be stuck in an age of nonexistent intellectualism? You see? You’re bible no longer applies to a society that can figure out a moral compass logically and rationally rather than through the faulty divine command theory. You guys do realize that they are paraphrasing and bending the words, right? This is nowhere near a direct translation. That, and all of these scriptures are from the Old Testament. Let me explain something to ya:

In the Old Testament, God required an animal sacrifice to pay for sin (because death is the penalty of sin), and His “chosen people” would slack off and stuff (oh and sin A LOT) so it had to be paid for somehow. That’s why He was so wrathful and (what seemed to be) unjust. The Israelites fell into sin without it being paid for, God got angry, and consequences happened.

When Jesus came, died, and rose again, He was the ultimate sacrifice. No more sacrifices required. Zero-zip-zilch. Ergo; no angry God. (Hm. I like the word ergo. I’m gonna have to use that one a bit more). When Jesus died, that sacrifice covered all sin. Past, present, and future. And that’s amazing to me because no matter how or when or why I mess up, God forgives me. He already has.

Now, I know not everyone believes that^ part. Just want everyone to be well informed. We don’t live by all the weird out of context gobbledeegook that is presented when attacking Christianity. It’s far from the actual content of the scripture. Attacking anyone’s religion.. on this large of a scale hurts. Everyone on tumblr is all like “oh i’m cool with you bein a christian as long as you don’t shove it down my throat and tell me im wrong”.. how is it justified for other religions or atheists? I get that a lot of Christians act that way.. and it really upsets me. And I’m so, so sorry. It agitates me just as much as it does a lot of people. (ANALOGY TIME: Don’t let the fandom ruin the show/anime/game. A lot of AWESOME shows/animes/games have sucky fandoms. (lol I just realized I’m part of the Jesus fandom))

(OOOOPS side note: Sure, the times have changed. Slavery was common practice in those days so God laid down the law about it. And if you were rich in those days, you had many wives who were more of maids in the household. God was addressing the common boundaries. It was all in the context of the age. That’s a major problem when it comes to attacking Christianity; simply look at the context and you can fit the pieces together. If I randomly pull out some sort of “and God smote the man” with no reason why He did it, no information of who the man was, and no time period, it’ll obviously sound harsh and evil.)

Nothing more amusing than an someone calling those with religious beliefs “mother f***kers” and have a nearly 400 words rant about how they’re ignorant. As the previous poster pointed out, these scriptures are from the Old Testament where basically God was giving guidelines to man because of how morally corrupt they were. He was trying to at least have people follow some kind of code because there was sin EVERYWHERE. And you have to take it in context for the statements to be understood because otherwise:

Sounds like an proposition? I’m merely talking about buying a donkey, but you wouldn’t know that by just reading that phrase. You have to have context or the message could be interpreted as completely wrong. And of course God knew that slavery was bad, His peeps (aka the Isrealites) were enslaved too. So, yeah…

It’s late and I felt like blowing off some steam, I get a bunch of ignorant responses on this repost and don’t feel like reading all of them, please, forgive me. But just for fun, let’s keep going.

You can sit there and make the argument that sin was everywhere in the 1700s and that slavery in america was just because hey, sin was everywhere. Men can be and are deplorable. God is not and I am extremely hesitant to attribute anything to God because I think man’s attempt to attribute things to god is ridiculous. But I do know if you’re telling me that God is supposed to be this being of infinite love, compassion, wisdom, and all that jazz, that he wouldn’t be able to find a better way to get Men to stop enslaving each other?

The biggest problem here is that you religious people speak about God as if you know better than i do about what HE wants. Referring to God as “He” is so incredibly insulting to the idea of God in the first place that you’re all just hypocrites. If god is as great as all these books claim ‘it’ to be, then aren’t you all humanizing ‘it’ by referring to it as he all the time? Attributing human characteristics to a being as great and mysterious as it? Your gods literally sound more like Zeus than any ultimate divine creator, with his jealousy and anger and all that shit.

All in all, slavery = bad, no matter what the context, what the time, who what when where and why, justifying human enslavement had no place in our supposed moral history, especially in a history that claims to be the moral compass for all mankind. All religions claim to be these religions of peace, and yet have histories of justifying slavery, abuse of women, and other such atrocities. It’s no wonder the old testament is filled with so many stories of war, that islam today treats women like property rather than people, and that there are more killings in the name of the Christian God than any other god in the history of mankind.

Slavery was, is, and always will be wrong. And if you had a “God” that justified it for whatever reason, then that God is not worth any such praise.
